Footpath

Maraetai School Road to Te Puru Park Path

We’re progressing plans for a new 565‑metre walking connection between Maraetai School Road and Te Puru Park. This project is part of the Franklin Paths Programme and will support safer, more accessible local travel for the Maraetai community.

What’s Happening

The project has now moved into the planning phase, and work has already begun on developing the initial concept design.

Recent work includes:

  • A site visit with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, who have requested early involvement to help guide the project due to cultural and heritage sensitivities in the area.
  • Early engagement with Franklin Local Board members to share initial findings and gather local insights.
  • Discussions with a Pōhutukawa Trails representative to ensure this link supports the wider trails network.
  • Commencement of concept design development, informed by site conditions and early stakeholder feedback.

This early engagement and design work is helping us understand opportunities, constraints, and local priorities before the concept is finalised.

What’s Changing

As planning progresses, we are exploring:

  • A safe, accessible walking connection between Maraetai School Road and Te Puru Park
  • Path alignment options that respect environmental, cultural, and landscape values
  • Opportunities to improve access to sports facilities, coastal areas, and community spaces
  • How this link integrates with the Pōhutukawa Trails network

More detail on the proposed alignment will be shared once concept design has progressed.

Why It Matters

    • Provides a safe and direct walking route for school children, families, and park users
    • Improves access to Te Puru Park and surrounding community facilities
    • Strengthens connections within the Pōhutukawa Trails network
    • Supports healthier, more active local travel options
