Whitford – Strathfield Lane Esplanade Coastal Trail

Project:

Coastal Trail

Location:

Whitford Strathfield Lane Esplanade Coastal Trail

Project Update:

In their April 2026 business meeting, the Franklin Local Board has approved for the Whitford – Strathfield Lane Coastal Route path to proceed to delivery.

 What’s Happening

The Strathfield Lane Coastal Route has been reviewed, and the original built‑path concept is no longer feasible due to coastal inundation risks and site constraints. The project has been updated to a simpler, low‑impact walking connection.

A mown grass walkway will be created along the coastal edge, supported by a removable bollard and basic information signage. This approach provides a safe, low‑maintenance walking route while respecting the coastal environment.

The project will now be delivered through operational maintenance, rather than major construction.

What’s Changing

  • A 190‑metre mown grass walking route
  • Installation of a removable timber bollard
  • Basic wayfinding and information signage
  • No formal built path due to coastal hazards and long‑term resilience issues

Why It Matters

  • Provides a simple, safe walking connection for local users
  • Avoids long‑term risks from coastal erosion and inundation
  • Minimises environmental impact in a sensitive coastal area
