Sandspit Reserve Coastal Path

Project update – Resource consent has been granted and Land & Sea Civil Limited has been appointed to deliver the project. Construction is scheduled to commence in October 2026 and is expected to take approximately 6–7 months to complete, subject to weather and coastal conditions.

About the project 

We are proposing a 916 metre pathway (including 788 metres of boardwalk) that will connect Sandspit Reserve and Riverside Drive Recreation Reserve. This track will complete the missing footpath link between the two reserves.

What’s happening

• Create a new walking connection between Sandspit Reserve and Riverside Drive Recreation Reserve.
• Include approximately 780 metres of boardwalk and associated path connections.
• Complete Section B of the Waiuku Aspirational Trails.
• Improve access to the coast and strengthen connections within the wider Waiuku path network.

Timeline

• Contractor mobilisation and site establishment.
• Construction commencing October 2026.

Why It Matters

• This project completes the final missing section of the existing walking network around the Sandspit Peninsula, creating a full loop for residents and visitors.
• The boardwalk section will provide a safe, elevated route over the water, improving access while protecting the coastal environment.
• Strengthens walking and cycling connections between Sandspit Reserve and Riverside Drive Recreation Reserve.
• Supports active, healthy lifestyles and aligns with the Franklin Local Board’s goal of improving local walking and cycling networks.
